Oat Straw Extract
Four small RCTs, all with manufacturer involvement: a 2011 trial (Berry et al.) in elderly people with below-average cognition found a single 1600mg dose reduced Stroop errors, but 2400mg did no better than placebo; a 2012 trial by the same group found 1500mg/day for 12 weeks had no effect on any cognitive measure in healthy older adults (material supplied by Frutarom); a 2015 trial (Kennedy et al., two Frutarom employees as co-authors) found 800mg improved speed, delayed recall and executive function in adults 40–65 with memory complaints, concluding the optimal dose is at or below 800mg; and a 2020 trial (Kennedy et al., two Anklam Extrakt employees as co-authors) found 430–1290mg improved working memory and multitasking over 4 weeks, with no effect on mood. No trial has measured cerebral blood flow.

作用機序
Oat Straw (Avena sativa) extract works primarily by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4) and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). PDE4 inhibition increases cyclic AMP levels in neurons, enhancing dopaminergic signalling. MAO-B inhibition slows dopamine breakdown. Additionally, oat straw increases nitric oxide production for cerebral vasodilation and contains avenanthramides — unique anti-inflammatory compounds.

実証された効果
- Acute attention and executive-function gains in small trials
- Working memory and multitasking over 4 weeks (one trial)
副作用と注意事項
- Generally well tolerated — no serious adverse events and no blood-pressure changes in the trials reviewed
- Mild GI discomfort rare
- Oats are often cross-contaminated with gluten during processing — choose a certified gluten-free product if you have celiac disease

スタッキングの推奨
Oat Straw Extractと相性の良い成分とその理由。
Oat Straw supports dopaminergic signalling via MAO-B; Alpha-GPC supports cholinergic signalling. Complementary neurotransmitter coverage for focus.
Both support dopamine availability — Oat Straw by slowing breakdown (MAO-B), Tyrosine by providing precursor. Synergistic under stress.
Oat Straw provides acute attention benefits; Bacopa provides long-term memory consolidation. Covers both short-term and long-term cognitive needs.
よくある質問
Is Oat Straw the same as oatmeal?
No. Oat Straw extract comes from the green, unripe aerial parts of Avena sativa — harvested before the oat grain matures. The active compounds (avenanthramides, saponins) are concentrated in the green straw, not the grain. Eating oatmeal does not provide nootropic effects.
Is a higher dose better?
Not in the trials. In Berry 2011, 1600mg reduced Stroop errors but 2400mg did no better than placebo, and Kennedy 2015 concluded the optimal dose was at or below 800mg. Doses of 430–1290mg worked over 4 weeks in Kennedy 2020.
Does Oat Straw contain gluten?
Oats are technically gluten-free but are commonly cross-contaminated with wheat during processing. If you have celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, verify the supplement is certified gluten-free or avoid it entirely.
How does it compare to caffeine for focus?
It is not a stimulant, and no trial has compared the two. The oat extract trials found small attention and working-memory gains without the typical stimulant side effects, but the evidence base is four small, manufacturer-linked trials — far thinner than caffeine's.
