Lutemax 2020

Of the trials we reviewed, two name Lutemax 2020 as their material, both run or funded by its maker, OmniActive: a skin-tone trial and a screen-use trial (below); the cognitive evidence comes from lutein and zeaxanthin trials that do not name Lutemax 2020, one of which was funded and supplied by OmniActive (Stringham 2019). In healthy young adults, 12mg/day for 12 months raised MPOD and improved visual memory (Renzi-Hammond 2017 — co-authored by Abbott Nutrition staff, with material from DSM, a Lutemax competitor); 22mg/day for 12 months improved memory in adults with low macular pigment (Power 2018, funded by the European Research Council); and 13–27mg/day for 6 months improved memory, attention and processing speed (Stringham 2019, funded by OmniActive, which supplied the supplements). A 2023 meta-analysis found xanthophylls speed photostress (glare) recovery, and two OmniActive-funded trials also reported better glare and photostress recovery versus placebo: the screen-use trial below and a 12-month trial in 59 young adults (Stringham 2016). The maker's skin trial (Juturu 2016; two of three authors employed by OmniActive, which makes Lutemax) tested skin tone, not cognition. For screen-related eye symptoms the two trials disagree: in 48 students with 6+ hours of daily screen time, 24mg/day of the Lutemax 2020 formulation for 6 months reduced self-rated eye strain, eye fatigue and headache frequency and improved sleep quality versus placebo (Stringham 2017; funded by OmniActive, and the first author consults for it), though a separate report by OmniActive staff on a 48-person, 24mg/day, 6-month trial of the same design found the sleep difference significant at 3 months but not at 6 months (Culver 2018, not indexed in PubMed); in 70 heavy screen users a different lutein/zeaxanthin product (Lute-gen, 10mg lutein + 2mg zeaxanthin isomers; funded by its supplier, Bio-gen Extracts) improved tear production, tear-film stability and photo-stress recovery over 6 months, but self-rated eye strain, visual fatigue, sleep and attention did not differ from placebo (Lopresti & Smith 2025).

作用機序

Lutemax 2020 is a patented marigold extract providing lutein and two zeaxanthin isomers (RR- and RS-meso-zeaxanthin) in a roughly 5:1 ratio. These carotenoids accumulate in the macula of the eye and in brain tissue, where they filter high-energy blue light and neutralise reactive oxygen species. Supplementation raises macular pigment optical density (MPOD), a biomarker correlated with visual function and cognitive processing speed.

実証された効果

  • Macular pigment (MPOD) support
  • Faster glare recovery (xanthophyll meta-analysis)
  • Memory and processing speed in lutein/zeaxanthin trials (not Lutemax-specific)

副作用と注意事項

  • Generally very well tolerated — no serious adverse events in any trial reviewed
  • Mild carotenodermia (yellow skin tint) is a known class effect at very high doses, though not reported in the trials reviewed

摂取方法

Dosage12–27mg/day total lutein + zeaxanthin (the range used in trials)
TimingWith a meal — carotenoids are fat-soluble and require dietary fat for absorption.
With foodEssential. Take with a fat-containing meal.
FormsCapsule (softgel preferred for lipid matrix). Lutemax 2020 is a branded lutein/zeaxanthin extract; the cognitive trials used other lutein/zeaxanthin materials. Generic lutein/zeaxanthin supplements may differ in isomer ratio and bioavailability.

スタッキングの推奨

Lutemax 2020と相性の良い成分とその理由。

Lutein and zeaxanthin support macular pigment; L-Theanine supports calm attention. A common pairing for extended screen work, though the combination has not been tested.

DHA supports retinal cell membrane integrity while Lutemax provides antioxidant protection. Complementary eye and brain health support.

Citicoline supplies choline for acetylcholine and membranes; lutein and zeaxanthin support macular pigment. Different pathways, not tested together.

よくある質問

Is Lutemax 2020 a nootropic?

Not in the traditional sense. It does not directly modulate neurotransmitters. Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the eye and brain, and generic lutein/zeaxanthin trials found small memory and processing-speed gains after 6–12 months — but we found no cognitive trial that names Lutemax 2020 as its material (the 2019 trial that found processing-speed gains was funded and supplied by OmniActive, but we could not confirm which product it used). The two trials we found that name it, both run or funded by its maker, OmniActive, measured skin tone (Juturu 2016) and screen-related eye symptoms, sleep and visual performance (Stringham 2017), not cognition.

Can I get enough lutein from diet?

Lutein is found in egg yolks, spinach, kale, and corn. Most Western diets provide only 1-2mg/day — well below the 12–27mg/day used in the trials. Supplementation is the practical route to reach therapeutic levels.

How is Lutemax 2020 different from generic lutein?

Lutemax 2020 provides both zeaxanthin isomers (RR- and RS-meso-zeaxanthin) in addition to lutein, in a roughly 5:1 lutein-to-zeaxanthin ratio. Generic lutein supplements typically provide only lutein or only one zeaxanthin form. No trial has compared Lutemax 2020 head-to-head with generic lutein.

Does it reduce eye strain from screens?

The evidence is mixed. In a 6-month trial in 48 students with 6+ hours of daily screen time, 24mg/day of the Lutemax 2020 formulation reduced self-rated eye strain, eye fatigue and headache frequency versus placebo (Stringham 2017 — funded by OmniActive, which makes Lutemax, and the first author consults for it). In a larger 6-month trial in 70 heavy screen users, a different product (Lute-gen, 10mg lutein + 2mg zeaxanthin isomers; funded by its supplier, Bio-gen Extracts) improved objective dry-eye measures (tear production, tear-film stability) and photo-stress recovery, but self-rated eye strain, visual fatigue, sleep and attention did not differ from placebo (Lopresti & Smith 2025). The other measured effects are higher macular pigment and faster glare recovery, with MPOD and cognitive changes assessed after 6–12 months.
