Verdict

FANCL BRAINs falls short.

FANCL BRAINs is a Japanese Food with Function Claims product (機能性表示食品, notification G425) from one of Japan's most trusted health brands. It is sold through FANCL's official Rakuten store, where it is labelled 機能性表示食品. A mainstream option for Japanese consumers who prefer domestic brands with Japanese-language labels and local customer support. FANCL was acquired by Kirin Holdings in 2024. Kirin has launched an international DTC arm (KHSI Pty Ltd, Sydney) from April 2026 and is actively developing new brain health ingredients (Agrimonia pilosa). Kirin's strategic focus on longevity and cognitive health reinforces FANCL BRAINs' long-term credibility.

What it does

FANCL BRAINs is a Japanese functional food supplement (機能性表示食品) formulated to support memory and cognitive function. Made by FANCL Corporation, a household name in Japanese health and beauty with over 40 years of history. Unlike imported Western nootropics, FANCL BRAINs is sold through FANCL's official Rakuten store, labelled 機能性表示食品, and is notified under Japan's Foods with Function Claims (FFC) system: the Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA, 消費者庁) database lists notification G425, 商品名 BRAINs(ブレインズ), 届出者 株式会社ファンケル, notified 2021/08/18, with the functional ingredients バコパサポニン、熟成ホップ由来苦味酸 at 15 mg + 35 mg per 4 tablets a day (CAA database, checked 2026-10-06).

How it works

FANCL's notified functional ingredients (機能性関与成分) are bacopa saponins (15mg per 4 tablets) and matured hop bitter acids (35mg per 4 tablets). Per FANCL's Food with Function Claims notification (届出番号 G425), bacopa saponins are reported to help maintain memory — the ability to remember and recall things seen and heard in daily life — which declines with age, and matured hop bitter acids are reported to help maintain attention (processing several pieces of information at once, and processing information correctly) and to reduce temporary feelings of anxiety in daily life. FANCL cites a 12-week trial of bacopa saponins at 12.5mg/day and 12-week trials of matured hop bitter acids at 35mg/day. As with every 機能性表示食品, these claims are the manufacturer's notified evidence, not a government evaluation.

What to expect

Weeks 1-2: no noticeable acute effects — this is a foundational supplement, not a stimulant. Weeks 4-6: subtle improvements in recall speed and mental clarity, particularly in adults over 40. At 12+ weeks: sustained brain health maintenance. FANCL recommends 4 tablets daily. It is sold through FANCL's official Rakuten store, labelled 機能性表示食品 (notification G425). At ¥5,479 for a 30-day bag (list price on fancl.co.jp; ¥4,930 on subscription), it is significantly cheaper than imported alternatives with zero import duty or customs risk.
